Review – True Blood: New World in My View (2.10)

Sookie, Bill and Jason return to a Bon Temps turned upside down by Maryann. Lured to Merlotte’s by Arlene, Sam and Andy find cold comfort in their refuge from a group of bloodthirsty revelers. Bill discovers that traditional vampire techniques don’t work on Maryann; Hoyt and Jessica try to keep a lid on Maxine’s madness; and Sookie tries to push through the darkness consuming Tara. With all hell breaking loose, Jason takes the bull by the horns to rescue Sam, at least for the moment

Review - Merlin: "The Moment of Truth" (1.10)

Due to a missed time line on my part....This review did not make BSC Print. I posted it here so everyone may still read it.

When Merlin's home village is taken over by ruthless raiders he risks the exposure of his magical abilities to Arthur, who along with Gwen and Morgana have tagged along to help the young wizard. The long awaited back-story on this rebooted Merlin character has arrived. I have been waiting with anticipation for this episode, and while it was fun to watch, it did however leave me a bit disappointed as well.

Upon starting this episode I was pleased to see that someone else knows about Merlin's gift besides his mother and Gaius. The addition of Merlin's childhood friend was a nice plot element and I liked the fact that Will (Merlin's childhood friend) was the son of a fallen knight. I began to think their relationship could very well mirror a future friendship that Arthur and Merlin could share. This episode also put Merlin’s resolve to the test, because he had to choose between exposure of his gift to his friends from Camelot or saving his village. I was curious about the young wizard's origin and home village, so seeing him not only go there but fight for it was a real treat.

I do however have a few complaints on this episode. First, there was no real reason offered up as to why Merlin left his village. We learn that his village is not under Uther's realm so the threat of being executed for sorcery use seems doubtful. This raises the question, why go to Camelot and take on the risk of execution? Merlin tells Will he left the village because he did not “fit in” a rather weak point on the writer's back story. I know that Arthur and Merlin must be together, but I think the writers could have come up with something better than “teen angst” being the cause of Merlin’s departure to Camelot. The writing thus far has been great, maybe I had just set my expectations too high for Merlin’s origin, or not all has been revealed just yet. Secondly, the battle scenes during this episode were a bit lame in stark contrast to such episodes as “Merlin: Valiant (1.2)”. I think the final confrontation with the raiders came off as a bit too “B-Movie” like and the dust devil Merlin creates was a bit unimpressive. Since we have seen him set things on fire and wield a magical staff with deadly results, I expected more of a “flash”.

As the episode ends we see a dying Will take the fall for Merlin’s use of sorcery and keep the young warlock’s secret safe. I am glad it went that way because I was almost sure Will was going to expose Merlin out of jealousy because of his new friendship with Arthur. This was a good episode but did not turn out to be a step toward an exciting season finale which is on its way in only one more episode. I am a big fan of this show and I was expecting a build up by now since there are only twelve episodes in the first season. I have my eyes set on the next episode with the hope that things are about to get explosive and the wish that Merlin does not lose its magical appeal.

Eve Was Framed!

The part of man, the smarter one,
The one who dared, to just have fun,
She was God’s greatest gift,
Destined to cause a heavenly rift.

She was the vessel of life,
Her heart devoid of strife,
Beautiful and full of innocence,
A victim of Satan’s arrogance.

Satan knew all to well,
Curiosity can cast a spell,
Make one take a bite,
The other will out of spite,
Seduction filled the garden,
As God’s heart did harden,
Humanity was shamed,
Adam was never blamed,
Eve was framed!

With knowledge comes power,
And in Eden’s fatal hour,
She knew pain, tragedy, and death,
Upon the sweetness of her breath,

Adam found her underneath the tree,
And shared willingly in blasphemy,
He wiped the away her tears,
And he tried to ease her fears.

God then appeared with angered voice,
Punishment was his only choice,
He laid upon them both a curse,
Each different but neither worse,
One would always feel the world’s pain,

Jeff Smith speaks about - "New" BONE comics

Last night I announced two new BONE projects; BONE: Tall Tales and BONE: Quest for the Spark.

Tall Tales, pictured above, is a major repackaging of a book I did with Tom Sniegoski a few years ago called Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. This new book, which takes place after the Bones have returned to Boneville, revolves around Smiley and Bartleby telling tales around a campfire to a group of young Bone Scouts (their names are Ringo, Bingo, & Todd!).

One of the tales will be the long out of print story I did for Disney Adventures that was not in the BONE books, and will now be returned to the BONE cannon with a beautiful coloring job by Steve Hamaker. Another will be the The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero, which appeared in black & white as Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. Tom Sniegoski, who wrote SSRT, has written two new Johnson Bone stories, both of which are pretty incredible. All now in glorious Hamaker colors! I will be writing all the new Smiley and Bartleby stuff.

BONE: Quest for the Spark is a slightly different kind of thing. It is not a comic; it’s a novel. A series of three novels written by Tom Sniegoski that follow a new generation of Bone characters into the Valley.

I was a bit unsure about this project when Tom first suggested it, but when I read the first book I laughed so hard, I agreed to do it. Scholastic was so blown away by it, that they decided to make it available in hardcover and wanted the illustrations, of which I think I’m going to do about twenty, full bleed and in color.

While not an official sequel to my comic, it will be fun to see some the characters again, like the stupid rat creatures, and Roderick the racoon.

BONE: Tall Tales is scheduled for Summer of 2010, and BONE: Quest for the Spark volume one, is set for 2011.

Deep is his tempting voice,

Long shadows stretch deep in the lingering night in which my faith almost was vanquished by the servants of the God of Light and Truth. We once kept the secrets of blasphemy and piety; we brought faith to mortal end.Then those who sought our counsel and hand on matters most discreet, decided that Assishans have no place in a world of black and white, so those on either side sought to dissipate the gray. Despite their heretic desire, I survive and I will not go quietly nor will I faithlessly wander. I will as a disciple of Deyja bring blade to those that she has chosen to embrace.

An ambiguous line stretches between what some call good and evil. I stand upon this line, wearing my golden ceremonial mask, expressionless and cold, the treasured mark of my forgotten order. I am neither the vindicator of the weak nor the subjugator of the powerful; my touch is death unbound and free of reason and remorse. I am an Assishan, loyal servant of Deyja Goddess of Death. Until they day I embrace her with my eyes closed, I see only the beauty of my faith.

A Valentine Prayer

This blade to heart,
Its slash so sweet and tart,
Your heartfelt and blessed scream,
A murderous romantic dream.

No feeling could be greater,
Upon the hands of a vindicator,
Who believes that love need take blame,
For its lurid and vengeful game.

Dearest St Valentine, hear my solemn prayer,
Written with blood by mortal hand,
I will heal pain upon your command,
Dearest St Valentine, know my intent,
To save a love lost through brutality,
I shall deliver and prove mortality,
I do this in memory of you with care,
For the lost of love, I shall wickedly repent.

Flowers red and sweetest candy,
How you live a life so evil and dandy,
Hear now the tear of your pale skin,

Been a busy weekend but the 100 sonnets are done. Here are #50, #75, and #100 for your enjoyment. I have a lot of editing to do on this stuff, but at least the writing is done. I am not sure when this will hit print, but I know what the cover will look like.

Sonnet # 50

A Walk

I thought to forsake God,
And be free of a herded thought,
Walk away from holy biblical sod,
That a Sheppard of souls did wrought,
Now the Father would not grateful,
That I would walk simply away,
My move was truly insightful,
I was just not a simple stray,
I traveled beyond their sight,
I passed through a desert of doubt,
Through shadow and light,
And found no one about,
There at last Nirvana was before my eyes,
Underneath blissful and blue colored blasphemous skies.

Sonnet # 75

Hateful Conversation

Let’s create a great disease,
Something that has no cure,
And kill whomever we please,
The tainted or perhaps the pure,
We shall not spare anyone,
From lofty places to far below,
Now Hate was far from done,
All his lurid thoughts I would know,
The further words of detestation,
Spoke of things that promised to be foul,
This was not pleasant conversation,
I was shown images that made me scowl,
When finished Hate grinned bright,
Its pompous lips the color of endless night.

Simple Steven

Simple Steven did as he was told,
He lived and dreamed like everyone,
That never sought to be bold,
Cause rebellion was not fun,
So Steve worn a blissful and stupid grin,
Like all the other society clones,
They all lived in fear of sin,
Like religiously righteous drones,
The one day Steve did die,
He fell dead on a busy street,
No one even batted an eye,
Though his gravestone did entreat,
Here lies the man, who thought,
Should I believe what I was a taught?

First Bookspot Central Review

I am awaiting my review copy of City of Jade by Dennis L. McKiernan. I am very excited to read the book and look forward to my first off site review. Keep checking back on this item.
Tales from Adaxxis, is still being fine tuned and should still be on track for 2009 release.
Poisonous Prose, is now in its final review phase and should be in print very soon.
On the novel front, I am hard at work and hope to have two titles done this year.
I have also begun work a something, even I did not anticipate....more to come.

Dark Horse comics once again brings to life Robert E. Howard's dark tales of fantasy and adventure. This time there is no barbarian, we now journey alongside a lone butt-kicking puritan, named Solomon Kane.

I liked this interpretation and look forward to DH continuing the tale of this anti-hero from the father of pulp fiction.

The Wizard Of Oz #1

The trend in movies has always been take something great and tell it again in a new way. So now many comic book companies have taken that approach as well. The classic tale of The Wizard of Oz, has been retold by Marvel. I am a big fan of Baum and read this issue with a critical eye.

Well, I loved what has been done thus far and look forward to seeing the rest. I think the art was edgy but also done in a classic way. I loved the fact they did not glaze over the book, but rather seem interested in telling it close to the original. This journey has just begun, keep you posted.

Take Flight

While most graphic novels are nothing more than reprints of various popular monthly comics. Flight is so much more, reading this collection, is like going to a local club and hearing a bunch of unsigned bands play their hearts out. Some of the songs are great and some are not half bad.

"Harry Potter" Killers?

Here are some books that the media hyped as the new "Harry Potter", how many more times are we gonna hear that comparison? Not only are these books not the next "Harry Potter", they pretty much are nothing more than media hyped pulp. So they sold millions or thousands of copies, that is what they keep telling us right?

I have opened and started to read both these books, and I was able to quickly spit out the bit of throw-up that filled my mouth upon reading them. I may seem a bit mean, maybe I am and for that I apologize. I know there are some who love these books and to you I say, I am glad that these books have gotten you to read, but there are other books, in print far better than these. I have suggested a book for you to read based upon your previous selection.

You Read

Have you read the great "TWILIGHT"? Our story begins with Romeo and Juliet mixed with teenage angst ala EMO style, throw in some vampires who long to be loved and bingo! Harry Potter?

Sorry I was at several Harry Potter book releases and waited with hundreds of fans for over two hours to get my hands on the latest copy of Harry's adventures. The author of this vampire series was actually at my local Barnes & Noble signing copies. I saw a handful of kids milling about, it was a surprisingly small turnout.

I think those at the event were there due to the movie being released soon and that's about it. In fact I am quite sure if this, how you ask? Well I overheard two young fans talking about the book.

Here is what I heard :

"Have you read the book?" A teenage fan asks another.

"No, but Robert Pattinson (Edward) is so cute! Did you?"

"No but I can't wait to see the movie." Replies the first.

Guess that sums it up....

(Note to self get movie done about book and have teenage heart throb star in it.)

Here is the other "Harry Potter" Killer or "Star Wars and Lord of the Rings Equal"

I give you "Eragon".

Written by a fifteen year old author (so the legend goes), who read all the great fantasy books ever written, Then he watched the Star Wars trilogy and said "I will write a book!"

So he took a pinch of J.R.R Tolkien (names, plot and such), mixed in a bit of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern", lets not forget a good dab of "Star Wars" swords and stuff. Give it a stir and you get a book that everyone knows and will love because they love the originals.

Harry Potter Killer?

Well, it was a "Trilogy", now its a "Cycle".( There are three new Star Wars films, can you say new material?)

I am glad this book got people to read fantasy, but again you should read something better.

I also wrote a book when I was fifteen, however I spared the world my innocent youthful remake of several books I read at that time.

(Note to self in next life get a book published, but do it at thirteen years old.)

Been a while and I have got a few reviews to post, sorry for delay.

	A collection of the classic Savage Sword of Conan in all its black and white glory. This first volume begins to collect the series that dominated the fantasy comic line of the 70's and early 80's. For many fantasy fans this was dream come true. PLMII Rating: Out of 5 Skulls
	DEXTER! for some the name means mayhem, murder and must have TV on DVD. This ground breaking show is based upon the books by Jeff Lindsay, is taking TV by storm. It is now going into its fourth season next year and if you haven't seen it yet you should. PLMII Rating: Out of 5 Skulls
	True Blood is not the "Twilight" clone as the fans, media and movie producers would have you think. In fact it is based upon Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, which was publish many years before Twilight. Alan Ball brings Charlaine's series to the screen and spares the world of sappy, vegan, EMO, romeo type vampires and their whining teenage girlfriends. This is one show for adults only and the vampires, shape shifters and other strange things keep you glue to your seat. Season One has wrapped up and I for one can't wait for Season Two. What would happens if Vampires lived among us? Get this DVD and find out. PLMII Rating: Out of 5 Skulls
