Dragonlance Movie...My Thoughts

Well...I got my hands on the DragonLance DVD!!!
- I want to start of by saying that I am a huge Dragonlance fan. I have read almost every title in the series, which is quite extensive. I have had the privilege to meet both Margaret and Tracy, and the famous Larry Elmore (Dragonlance artist).
- This review is from a true DL fan and not some DVD reviewing hack.
My Thoughts:
- It was great to see Dragons of Autumn Twilight brought to the small screen. Yet the twenty year wait, and the subsequent releases of such books into movies as, LOTR and HP, it was disheartening to see the DL movie receive such little support from movie studios. While movies like “Stardust” receive such huge fanfare and budgets, and I like Gaiman’s work.
- The movie is mixed with traditional and digital animation, sounds good but seems to not lend well on screen. All the dragons and draconians are in digital animation, while everything else is done in what appears to be early Saturday morning 80’s animation style. I found myself wishing perhaps they should have stuck to just plain animation or digital. I am sorry to say the mixing of styles did not look well at all.
- The voice acting was great and seeing and hearing Raistlin on screen was pure magic. I like the fact a good portion of the story was covered, with a few cuts and minor details changed. However most of the characters seemed flat and even Raistlin appeared too Saturday D&D cartoonish at times. I watched the movie and still enjoyed it despite some obvious flaws.
- What amazes me is that ERAGON gets a full blown Hollywood treatment, and Dragonlance gets the shaft. I hope another DL animated movie is in the works, but this time I hope, the producers choose one style and stick to it.
- In conclusion, I will buy this DVD, and I did enjoy the return journey to Krynn. Was it the best translation? Well I leave that up to the viewer. Now I am off to read my DL books again.
